Jaco van Schalkwyk (November 2014)

Topoi, Tropi, Apotropos

22 November – 20 December 2014
Please join us for the opening on Saturday 22 November at 14:00

The relationship between art and science, especially mathematics, is at best tenuous, unless one conceives of art as a symbolic language in the same manner that mathematics operates as a system of relational  symbols. In his current exhibition Jaco van Schalkwyk, an artist versed in the philosophy of mathematics, introduces us to three new concepts in this regard; topoi, tropi and apotropos, all of which are indicative of the transcendental event: Topoi in the sense of analytical philosophy and the mathematics of appearing, and Tropi and  Apotropos in the sense of mystical enquiry.

Jaco van Schalkwyk (b. 1979) received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Drawing from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn NY with Highest Honors. He was the recipient of the Pratt Circle Award for Academic Achievement in 2003 and editor of The Prattler student newspaper. He returned to South Africa in 2008. Van Schalkwyk's work has been included in private and corporate collections in South Africa, the USA and Europe. A survey of his work on paper, Drawings 2011-2013 is available from GALLERY AOP. His debut novel, The Alibi Club, was published in 2014 by Umuzi. Topoi, Tropi, Apotropos is his fourth solo exhibition with GALLERY AOP.
