Hodgins House is privileged to present a selection of drawings and sketches by Robert Hodgins, extant from his studio in Midrand, Gauteng, where he worked from for the last sixteen years of his life. The comprehensive collection of drawings, spanning almost Hodgins’ entire career, are generously made available by Jan Neethling, long time friend of the artist, on behalf of the Hodgins estate. The exhibition, guest curated by Alet Vorster, is accompanied by an illustrated catalogue. The catalogue serves as a documentation of the collection and includes essays by Jan Neethling and Wilhelm van Rensburg.

This rare and diverse collection of drawings and sketches, featuring some early works, is being shown here for the first time, almost ten years after Hodgins’ death. Recently, there has been a shift in attention towards ‘working’ drawings and sketches and the unique insight they provide into the creative processes and working methods of artists.

Collectors, scholars, art students and lovers of art alike, will find interest in the ‘knowing and thinking’ drawings from the studio of one of South Africa’s most fascinating and successful artists. The exhibition provides a rare glimpse into the usually private and forbidden domain of the artist’s studio. Many paintings from Hodgins’ prolific oeuvre can be referred to particular drawings on the exhibition.

Internationally, museums and art galleries have also started paying more attention to sketches and drawings, as is evident by exhibitions such as the one of Lucian Freud’s drawings shown at Matthew Marks Gallery, New York.

Hodgins House was started five years ago by Sarah Ballam, as a homage to her friend, mentor and colleague Robert Hodgins. Hodgins House is a working studio that presents a short season of select exhibitions annually from September to December.
